**Exploring Creativity and Raising Sickle Cell Awareness: A Special Event at Theatre Peckham**

On October 12th, Theatre Peckham will host a unique and powerful event as part of its *Young, Gifted, and Black* season. This community-focused gathering will bring together voices from the entertainment world and healthcare advocates to explore the intersection of creativity and Sickle Cell awareness. Featuring key players from the hit Netflix series Supacell as well as insights from The Sickle Cell Society, this interactive event promises to spark vital conversations around the underrepresented health condition while empowering young creatives.
Raising Awareness Through Storytelling: One of the highlights of the event is its focus on Sickle Cell Disorder and Supacell, a 2024 British superhero series created by Rapman for Netflix. Launched to critical acclaim in June, Supacell not only entertains but shines a spotlight on Sickle Cell Disorder, a condition that disproportionately affects people of African and Caribbean descent. By weaving this important storyline into a superhero narrative, the show has ignited fresh discussions about the condition—giving it a platform rarely seen in popular media.
The event at Theatre Peckham will delve into this unique storytelling approach, exploring how media and the arts can be used as powerful tools for social change. Attendees will enjoy a panel discussion, featuring scenes from Supacell and insights from cast members, as well as voices from the Sickle Cell Society and TV professionals.
Interactive Workshops for Young Creatives
Before the main panel, Theatre Peckham is offering two exciting workshops aimed at young actors and aspiring creatives aged 16-25:
- Script to Performance with Michael Salami
- On-Set Direction for Actors
These workshops will provide invaluable hands-on experience for emerging talents, giving them the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and gain practical insights into the world of TV and film production.
Panel Discussion and Open Q&A
Following the workshops, the event will host a panel discussion, moderated by Annika Allen Gray, Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at All3Media. The panel will screen selected scenes from Supacell and feature cast members such as:
- Akai Coleman as Tiny
- Xavien Russell as Dotz
- Mickira Oji as Skreamer
- Ky-Marni Carty as AJ
Alongside the cast, industry experts and advocates will include:
- Iyare Igiehon, Creative Diversity Partner, BBC
- John James OBE, CEO of The Sickle Cell Society
- Simone Pennant, The TV Collective
This conversation will give audiences an opportunity to hear first-hand how Supacell has advanced the conversation around Sickle Cell Disorder, with the floor opening up for a wider Q&A session.
A Platform for Awareness and Change
Suzann McLean, Director of Theatre Peckham, shared her thoughts on the event’s significance: “At Theatre Peckham, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire change. This event brings creative minds together with thought leaders to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disorder. By partnering with the Sickle Cell Society, we’re creating a space for dialogue, education, and empowerment.”
